Destiny

Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny. Tryon Edwards

From Wikipedia: Tryon Edwards (1809–1894) was an American theologian, best known for compiling A Dictionary of Thoughts, a book of quotations. He published the works of Jonathan Edwards (the younger) in 1842. He was minister of the Second Congregational Church in New London, Connecticut, from 1845-1857, after having served in Rochester, New York.

From my brief search he is portrayed as stern type of figure in this portrait. But who knows maybe that was just the artists interpretation. Edwards

Interrupt – Speech

nicholson

From the lips of the incomparable Jack Nicholson, this rude but clearly to the point of not wanting to be disturbed in the movie As Good As It Gets.

Melvin Udall: Never, never, interrupt me, okay? Not if there’s a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there’s a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you’re going to faint. Even then, don’t come knocking. Or, if it’s election night, and you’re excited and you wanna celebrate because some fudgepacker that you date has been elected the first queer president of the United States and he’s going to have you down to Camp David, and you want someone to share the moment with. Even then, don’t knock. Not on this door. Not for ANY reason. Do you get me, sweetheart?

He of course later redeems himself mostly because of his love of a good woman played by the wonderful Helen Hunt.

The youtube clip.

Failure

trobbins

So you think that you’re a failure, do you? Well, you probably are. What’s wrong with that? In the first place, if you’ve any sense at all you must have learned by now that we pay just as dearly for our triumphs as we do for our defeats. Go ahead and fail. But fail with wit, fail with grace, fail with style. A mediocre failure is as insufferable as a mediocre success. Embrace failure! Seek it out. Learn to love it. That may be the only way any of us will ever be free. Tom Robbins

A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having! V. From the Movie V from Vendetta.

Of course he was dancing with the wonderful Natalie Portman, so some might say she is worth a little revolution herself. Natalie-Portman

Earful of Cider – Speech

Guys-And-dolls-1955-2

Good advice, Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, what else do you need.

On the day when I left home to make my way in the world, my Daddy took me to one side. ‘Son,’ my Daddy says to me, ‘I am sorry I am not able to bankroll you to a very large start, but not having the necessary lettuce to get you rolling, instead I’m going to stake you to some very valuable advice.

One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, you do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you’re going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

The clip is a little long, and the speech is towards the beginning. But watch the whole clip for the punchline. Ah words to live by.

Leaving

Terry-Pratchett

Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colours. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. Terry PratchettA Hat Full Of Sky

I have not read this book, although anyone who allows himself to be pictured this way cannot be all bad. pratchett
