Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (18 December 1878 – 5 March 1953) was the leader of the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s until his death in 1953. Holding the post of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, he was effectively the dictator of the state.

Short History: Born in Leningrad in 1940 (so he was a year younger than my father who was not born in Leningrad) He became a poet and eventually thrown out of the Soviet Union as a dissident. 1987 awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for an all-embracing authorship, imbued with clarity of thought and poetic intensity”. (Someone I should definitely take the time to read.) Died 1996 after being reunited with his family when the Soviet Union collapsed.
