Tending the Stones for the Lock IX

9th part of the new weekly story.  (First Part)   The inspiration for this came from an off hand comment I made on Facebook, and since people seemed interested I decided to follow through.  Happy Reading.

(1st Part) (2nd Part)  (3rd Part) (4th Part) (5th Part) (6th Part) (7th Part) (8th Part) (9th Part)(Part 10) (Part 11)

“Why what is going on?”  Brodie stated but Mrs. Emily did not answer.  Then she stood still and dropped her cane.  I went to pick it up but she growled.  “Did you just growl?”  Brodie stepped back away then he felt it, the air was humming, or maybe it was vibrating.  The air was charged like it was electrified.  He realized he had stepped back further from Mrs. Emily and if she fell he would not be able to assist her.  That is when he saw a blue glow.  The air around Mr. Webb was glowing as if he had a neon light strapped to his back.  Brodie shook his head then rubbed his eyes.  Then Mrs. Emily took a single step forward and he saw a similar glow from Mrs. Emily but whereas Mr. Webb’s was blue Mrs. Emily’s was green.

Brodie fell over a stone.  He realized he had been walking backwards this entire time and was a good distance away from Mrs. Emily now.  He watched as the older lady continued to take steps towards the road.  He looked for the High Pilgrim for help and did not see the older man.  Hans and Dante were standing in front of the RV with two long wooden staffs.  Where they had gotten them Brodie was unsure but they held the two figures in dark clothing back from approaching the RV.  Every once in while one of the dark figures would move as if to go around the RV but the two monks would stop them with a swing of the long wooden weapon.

Brodie turned back towards Mrs. Emily who had stopped advancing and the green glow around her had grown while the blue light around Mr. Webb and darkened and was almost a purple color.   Then all of a sudden the lights ceased and Mr. Webb fell down to both knees.  Brodie could see Mrs. Emily was wavering and he ran to her picking up her cane that she had left ten feet behind her as she advanced across the field.

“Are you okay?” Brodie asked.

“Yes.”  Brodie could tell she was lying as she was sweating and he saw that she was visibly shaking.  Then Mrs. Emily said quietly don’t let me fall till after Webb has left.”

Brodie looked up and the two figures, men he now saw, dressed in traditional mid-eastern robes were helping Mr. Webb into the car.  He watched as Mr. Webb was loaded into the back of the black car, none too carefully he noted and the car drove off without even fastening the older man into a seat belt.

Mrs. Emily followed the car with Brodie then when they were lost going down into a nearby valley she collapsed.  Luckily Brodie caught her and began to carry her back to the RV.

The High Pilgrim was coming down the step and Brodie brushed past the man without a word but glared at him when he saw he was about to talk. He laid Mrs. Emily in the rearmost bed of the RV and immediately felt for her pulse.  It was strong, a little rapid but he noticed it slowing down.  He then got out the blood pressure cuff and took her pressure.  The pressure was a little high but he took it again and noted it had dropped a few points.

“Are you okay?”  Brodie said as he saw her looking up at him as took the cuff off her.

“I am fine, I am so sorry for growling at you in the field but I was concentrating very hard and could not think of what to say that would get your attention.”

“That is okay Mrs. Emily can I get you a drink of water or something?”

She reached out and grabbed his hand firmly.  “No I am fine, but I think I would like to take a nap now.  Please have some dark chocolate ready for me when I wake up, I have a feeling I am going to need the calories.”

“Okay if you think that is best, I will be back in to check on you in a little while.”

“Good boy.”  Mrs. Emily said and gave his hand a squeeze and then turned over on her side to sleep.

Brodie made sure her cane was close by then checked the schedule on phone to see if she was due for any medicine and saw it would be hour before anything was called for.  He backed out of the the small bedroom and closed the door behind him.  He was met by the High Pilgrim and his two monks.  He glared at the High Pilgrim.  “Where were you and when she was doing,” he searched for his a word “whatever it was she was doing out in that field?”  He realized he was using a very angry tone and immediately got a very upset stomach which he did every time he got into a heated confrontation with someone.

The High Pilgrim looked at him curiously.  “What did you see?”

This brought up Brodie short and he stopped and took a step back his acidic stomach forgotten for a second. “I saw some weird lights, from Mrs. Emily a green glow and from Mr. Webb the glow started out blue then kinda changed to purple.”

The High Pilgrim nodded thoughtfully.

“What happened out there?”  Brodie said sinking into a chair.

“Well there are some very old names for it, but basically you just witnessed as far as your beliefs allowed a magical duel between two powerfully trained people.”

Brodie shook  his head then he started to shake.  “Its all real, magic, demons its all real.”  He quickly put his head down below his legs.  The High Pilgrim stood over him and patted his back. “It will be alright Brodie you are with the good guys.”

Brodie took a deep breath and nodded, then he threw up all over the High Pilgrims high top black canvas Converse sneakers.

“You are taking it very well.”  The High Pilgrim stated calmly.

Not crazy about the title, any suggestions will be duly considered.

The problem I have discovered with this type of writing is if I commit to something in the story there is no taking it back I just have to go with is and write my way out of it.

If you would like to read my last weekly story, A Disinclined Purveyor of Sequential Art her it is. (Written in 2013, the same year my wife left me, so I was a different person back then, and I hope I have learned a lot about writing since then.)

My Response:   The prophecy stated that in 60 years if the Stones were not properly aligned then the world would fall under the sway of the demon king for 1000 years. 1956 21 year old Emily the chosen one starts the quest. She arranges half the Stones around the planet, but then falls in love and life happens. Now it is 59 years later, Emily’s husband of 58 years passed away and one of the monks has found Emily and reminds her that she is the chosen one and needs to complete her task. Anyone interested?

Witty observation, disparaging remark, question for A.A., well this is your chance.
